CLUB & MIDLAND HILL CLIMB CHAMPIONSHIP MEETING REPORT

A Club Meeting followed by the latest round of the Midland Hill Climb Championship produced two days of close and entertaining action at Prescott over the weekend (July 13/14) while one driver managed to set fastest time of the day on both of the Bugatti Owners’ Club organised events.

Mike Tower took his BMW 2002 to a class win on Saturday in the saloon car category of the Bugatti Owners Clubs and All Comers Handicap ahead of the BMW M3 of Paula Larisa Dragusanu while Stephen Moore took third in his Mitsubishi Evo 6. Mike took runner up spot in the same class on Sunday while victory went to Chris Toon at the wheel of his Renault Clio Evo 6.

It was a Porsche 1-2-3 in Saturday’s sports car class with Paul Howells taking top honours in his 911 RSR ahead of the Cayman GT4 of Richard Snow while Ross McDonald claimed third in the Carrera 2.7 RS replica. Top class honours on Sunday went the Zoe Shearman in a Lotus Exige.

Jan Nycz won the race class on Saturday in his Mallock Mk3 ahead of the OMS SC4CF of Anthony Ward and Gavin McLaren’ OMS 2000M while top points in the New Barn RS Interclub Championship were claimed by Chris McQueen driving a GBS Zero sports car with Jacon Barritt taking his Mazda MX5 to second place and Aaron Bland finishing third in this Abarth 124.

The BARC Connaught Speed Championship paid its annual visit to the hill and victory went to Justin Andrews driving a Subaru Impreza while Peter Richings claimed second place in his VW Golf R ahead of the Honda CRx of Matthew Gregory.

An amazing battle in the Classic Marques Speed Challenge saw Rob Pack take victory in his TVR Tuscan by just three hundredths of a second from the Morgan Plus 8 of Robert Toon while Steve Thomas finished third in his TVR Vixen.

Sunday provided another TVR victory in the Challenge but this time it went to Steve Mogg and his TVR Griffith ahead of Rob Pack and Robert Toon.

The win in the MG Car Club Championship on Saturday went to Ben Rolls driving an Austin Healey Sebring Sprite while a tight battle for second place between the MG Midgets of Peter Clark and John Egan was decided in favour of Clark by little more than a quarter of a second.

Fastest time of the day was set by Zachary Zammit driving his Empire Wraith single seater with a time of 37.80 seconds.

The focus on Sunday was inevitably on the Midland Hill Climb Championship and in class A(i) the battle for first place involved the shared Lotus Elise of David and Robert Wilson with David claiming the win by six hundredths of a second. Richard Snow had things marginally easier in class A(ii) beating the similar Porsche Cayman GT4 of Robert Lancaster Gaye by a little over half a second. Rodney Eyles took third place in his Alfa Romeo 4C. Meanwhile, Peter Richings took Class A(iii) in his VW Golf R.

The win in the Specialist Production Cat category went to Richard Price in his Caterham 7 ahead of the Westfields of Steven Garner and Rob Lloyd.

Steven Moore won the Modified Car class in his Mitsubishi Evo 6 while victory in the Sports Libre category went to the Mallock Mk20 of Samuel Nicholson.

Moving on to the various single seater categories Tom Weaver won the 600cc to 1100cc class in his Empire Evo 2 while Mark Schlanker took the 1100 to 1600cc class in his Force TA. Zachary Zammit took the 1600 to 2000cc class in his Empire Wraith less than half a second ahead of Alex Coles in his Force TA.

The large engined single seater class went to Graham Wynn driving a Gould GRW59.

Victory in both the Midland Hill Climb Championship Top 12 run offs went to Zachary Zammit with Graham Wynn taking second place on both occasions. Johnathan Varley took two third places in his GWR Predator. While Alex Coles took fourth place in the first run off, he spun his Force TA on the second run off, fortunately without damage. That allowed Tom Weaver to take a fourth place in his motorcycle engined Empire Evo 2.

Zachary Zammit’s double victory in the runoff ensured that he secured fastest time of the day for the second day running. His time of 36.80 seconds was exactly one second quicker than his best Saturday time.

The Midland Hill Climb Championship returns to Prescott on August 17th/18th along with Britain’s premier series, the British Hill Climb Championship. Full details of that meeting and all other events at Prescott can be found at www.prescotthillclimb.co.uk.
