BRITISH HILL CLIMB CHAMPIONSHIP PRODUCES CLOSE BATTLES THROUGHOUT THE FIELD

Updated: Oct 3

The British Hillclimb Championship’s second visit to Prescott in three weeks produced yet more closely fought battles both in the classes and for fastest time of the day while one title was settled within the Bugatti Owners’ Club’s own Fassi Classic Speed Championship.

The title within Class 4 of the Championship, newly introduced this season, was secured by Clive Berry driving his Chrysler Sunbeam 1600 Ti. The three remaining classes have yet to be decided.

Class A(i) of the British Hillclimb Championship, for Series Production Cars up to 2000cc once again produced an all-Lotus Elise top three with Robert Wilson heading the same car driven by David Wilson by a little over three tenths of a second. Third place went to Jonathan Langmead despite a fail on his opening run.

There were slightly more comfortable victories in classes A(ii) and (iii) for Porsche Cayman driver Duncan Andrews and John Dunne in his Mitsubishi Evo7 RS.

John Pick managed to outpace the massed ranks of Caterhams and Westfields in Class B for Specialist Production Cars to take the win in his AMS Murtaya.

The smaller engined modified production car classes produced relatively comfortable wins for the Hillman Imp of Eric Morrey and Stuart Reid in his Peugeot 205 but in the over 2000cc class, Damien Bradley beat the similar Subaru Impreza of Steven Darley by less than two tenths of a second to take top honours.

Scott Moran claimed Class E in the Skoda R5 ahead of Eynon Price and Roger Moran also at the wheel of Skoda R5s.

Allan McDonald won Class F for Sports Libre Cars, his Force SR4 finishing ahead of the Radical SR3 of Matthew Price and Samuel Nicholson’s Mallock Mk20.

Dave Tatham won Class I for racing cars up to 1100cc in his DJ Firehawk four tenths ahead of the OMS 28 of Jonathan Flesher with Stuart Bickley just seven hundredths of a second further back in his Force TA.

Jimmy Harris took the win among the pre 1994 Formula Ford cars in the Van Diemen RF85 ahead of the RF86 of Caroline Ryder while the win among the up to 1600cc single seaters went to the OMS 2000M of Gary Hill.

Among the normally aspirated up to 2000cc single seaters, Johnathan Varley followed up his new class record at the previous meeting with another class victory driving the GWR Predator while Paul Haimes set a new class record in the forced induction category to take the win in his Gould GR59.

There was a Gould 1-2-3 in Class L for racing cars over 2000cc with Wallace Menzies taking the win ahead of Matthew Ryder and Will Hall.

The meeting included two run offs for the Tin Top Top 10, and it was Scott Moran who took the win in the first run off in the Skoda R5 with Roger Moran finishing second in the same car. Third place went to Simon Bainbridge in the Audi R8 inspired SBR Chrono.

Roger Moran went one better to take victory in the second Tin Top Run Off with Subaru Imprezas taking second and third places in the hands of Steven Darley and Simon Bainbridge, respectively.

Matthew Ryder picked up where he left off at the previous meeting taking the first Top Twelve run off but by nine hundredths of a second from the man whose outright hill record he had taken three weeks earlier, Wallace Menzies. Making it a Gould 1-2-3 once again, Will Hall finished third, a quarter of a second further back.

Matthew Ryder made it a clean sweep in the second run off, this time beating Wallace Menzies by a scant six hundredths of a second. Will Hall claimed third sport once again.

Fastest Time of the Day went inevitably to Matthew Ryder with his time of 35.71 seconds set in the second Top Twelve Run Off.

Hillclimb action returns to Prescott on September 28th with the Vintage Long Course Meeting while the Hill Climb Season Finale on October 5th will see the conclusion of a number of Championships including the Bugatti Owners’ Club’s own series.
